A guide to kitchen cabinet types in DFW.
Door styles, finishes, and construction explained — so you can choose cabinets that fit your kitchen, your budget, and the way you actually cook.
Cabinets are the most visible — and the most expensive — decision in a kitchen remodel.
Three choices set your cabinets.
Choosing kitchen cabinets comes down to three decisions: the door style (Shaker, flat-panel, inset, or glass-front), the finish and color (painted, stained wood, dark, or two-tone), and the construction (framed or frameless). Cabinets typically run 30 to 40 percent of a kitchen remodel budget, so getting these three right is what makes the room feel custom instead of builder-grade.
§ 01Cabinet door styles, explained.
The door style is the single most noticeable thing about your cabinets. In DFW kitchens, five styles cover almost every project.
- Shaker. A clean five-piece door with a recessed flat center panel. The most popular and versatile choice — it reads traditional, transitional, or modern depending on the finish and hardware.
- Flat-panel (slab). A single flat slab with no frame or detail. The modern favorite, beautiful in natural wood veneer or a matte painted finish, and the easiest to wipe clean.
- Inset. Doors set flush inside the cabinet frame rather than overlaying it. The most precise, furniture-grade look — and the most expensive to build.
- Raised-panel. A contoured center panel for a more formal, traditional feel.
- Glass-front. Glass inserts (clear, seeded, or ribbed) used on a few upper cabinets as display accents.
§ 02Finishes and color.
Once you have a door style, the finish sets the mood. These are the directions we build most often in DFW:
- Painted white or off-white. Timeless, brightens the room, and the safest choice for resale.
- Stained wood. Warm and full of grain — white oak and walnut are the current favorites, as in the kitchen at the top of this guide.
- Dark and dramatic. Deep charcoal or matte black, usually paired with stone and brass for contrast.
- Two-tone. A different color on the island than the perimeter — a wood or deep-color island against lighter cabinets adds depth without committing the whole room.
§ 03Framed vs. frameless construction.
Underneath the door style is how the cabinet box itself is built, and it changes how the kitchen feels to use.
| Construction | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Framed (American) | A face frame on the front of the box | Traditional looks, classic Shaker, sturdiness |
| Frameless (European) | No face frame — full-access box | Modern flat-panel looks, more interior space, easier reach |
Neither is better in the abstract. Framed suits a classic painted Shaker kitchen; frameless suits a clean, modern flat-panel design.
§ 04Stock, semi-custom, or custom?
The same door style can be ordered at three levels, and the level you choose drives both cost and lead time.
- Stock. Pre-made standard sizes — the fastest and most affordable, with the fewest options.
- Semi-custom. Stock cabinets with modifications to size, finish, and details. The sweet spot for most DFW kitchens.
- Custom. Built to your exact specifications in any size and finish — the right call for unusual layouts or a specific look, at the highest cost.
Because cabinetry is the largest line item in most kitchens, it is worth seeing where it sits in the whole budget. For a full breakdown, read our DFW kitchen remodel cost guide.
Cabinets are where I tell clients to invest. You touch them every day, they set the tone of the whole room, and they are the one thing you cannot easily swap later. Spend on the boxes and the door style, and save on the things you can change down the road. — May N. · Co-Founder, UHS Remodeling · 5,875 projects
