Most remodel stress comes from not knowing what happens next.

The short answer

Six stages, and about 6 to 10 weeks for a kitchen.

A home remodel in DFW moves through six stages: design and planning, a fixed-price estimate, city permits, demolition, construction, and a final walkthrough. A kitchen remodel typically runs 6 to 10 weeks and $25,000 to $95,000. A full-home renovation runs 12 to 22 weeks and $95,000 to $350,000. Knowing each stage upfront is what keeps a project calm and predictable.

§ 01What are the steps involved in a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel follows six steps, and in DFW the full sequence takes about 6 to 10 weeks. The reason it is weeks and not days is one stubborn dependency we will get to in a moment.

  1. Design and layout (1 to 2 weeks). Measurements, layout options, and material selections for cabinets, counters, tile, and fixtures, finished as a 3D plan you can walk through before anything is ordered.
  2. Estimate and contract (1 week). A line-item, fixed-price proposal. The number you sign is the number you pay, with no allowance guesswork mid-build.
  3. Permits (1 to 3 weeks). Submitted to your city, whether that is Plano, Frisco, or McKinney, for plumbing, electrical, and structural work. UHS pulls these in our name.
  4. Demolition (2 to 4 days). Old cabinets, counters, and flooring removed and hauled, with dust barriers set first.
  5. Construction (4 to 7 weeks). Rough-in plumbing and electrical, inspection, drywall, cabinets, then countertops, backsplash, paint, fixtures, and appliances.
  6. Final walkthrough. A punch list, cleanup, and sign-off. You approve the work before it is called done.

The countertop template cannot happen until the cabinets are set and perfectly level, and the stone itself takes about a week to fabricate. That one dependency is why a kitchen is 6 to 10 weeks and not 3. We schedule around it from day one so there is never idle time on your site. — May N. · Co-Founder, UHS Remodeling · 5,875 projects

§ 03Do I need a permit to remodel in DFW?

Yes for most remodels. Any project that moves plumbing, changes electrical, or alters structure requires a city permit. Cosmetic-only work such as paint, hardware, or a like-for-like fixture swap usually does not. A reputable contractor pulls the permits in their name and schedules the inspections, and UHS handles this for you on every job.

§ 04What is the difference between a remodel and a renovation?

A remodel changes how a space functions or looks, such as a new layout or a new kitchen. A renovation updates an existing space without changing its structure. A whole-home renovation at UHS means a full update of finishes and systems across the house. Either way, you can browse current projects on our Plano home remodeling hub.
