This Plano primary bathroom was rebuilt as a spa: black marble walls, a black freestanding soaking tub positioned to catch natural light, a curbless walk-in shower in large-format tile, and a double vanity under LED mirrors. The brief was calm, dark, and deliberate — matte-black fixtures against stone, warm dimmable lighting, and radiant-heated floors underfoot on winter mornings.
A curbless shower is the most engineering-dense element in modern bathroom design. With no curb to contain water, the floor itself does the work: the pan must be recessed and precisely sloped toward a linear drain so water goes exactly where it should. On slab-on-grade North Texas homes — the standard here, sitting over expansive Blackland Prairie clay — recessing a pan and adjusting drain lines means working inside the concrete, which is planned around what is embedded in the slab before demolition starts. The freestanding tub added its own requirement: a floor-mounted tub filler is supplied through the floor, not the wall, so its rough-in has to be set early and set right. Behind the marble and tile, waterproofing continuity is the invisible layer that decides whether a bathroom like this stays perfect for decades.
